SHORT FILM — Warcraft 2.5D Short Film — Story Art + Development

Lighting & Composition Samples:

Between game releases, Blizzard’s Story & Franchise Development department likes to release animated shorts online to fill in any lore gaps that new and returning players might need to know before the next story unfolds. In this particular short, we wanted to reveal the DRAKTHYR, a new playable character that’s half-human half-dragon. I wanted to play with lighting, and the ways we can obscure or reveal very deliberate details to get the audience excited, and to set the mood.

Composition is KING in these 2.5D projects, and I was excited to try my hand at designing shots that could also hold up as standalone paintings!

Test Shot Development — A/B Panels:

As part of the pre-production planning for a future 2.5D animated short in the World of Warcraft universe, I was tasked with storyboarding a “test shot” that the team could use to audition various art vendors, to see how they would tackle the illustration of 3 key characters as well as the A / B state change within the shot.
